I am interested in symbols because I believe understanding the language of the ancients through art is how we can better understand history, heritage and ourselves. I want to include this language of symbols as a part of my art because I believe that to understand our present, we need to connect with our past.

I see the figures that I create to be a type of mirror for the viewer. Therefore, my figures are often gestural or abstract. They are abstract in the sense that they are symbols of a person or a body rather than an accurate illusion of it. Sometimes there is no hair or no face to indicate that this figure is anything other than a body, with a soul.

Spirituality is an individual sense that drives the human soul. And what is art, but the language of the human soul? Why else do we create? For me, art is inherently spiritual. Because people are inherently spiritual. This is true because although someone may not be religious, they still experience the spiritual through existential thought, passionate belief systems and relationships to others.  I think that greater happiness and health and greater community is formed when one is comfortable with confronting their own spirituality and defining what that belief system is for themselves.
